San Diego’s arts scene reaches well beyond its major museums. This page tracks the art walks, open studio nights, festivals, and cultural celebrations happening across the city, along with the local nonprofits that keep the arts accessible.
San Diego’s art scene is spread across several neighborhoods, each with its own focus:
The city's main cultural hub and home to many of its museums and cultural institutions.
Known for the murals of Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark rooted in Chicano history and art.
Host to some of the city's largest outdoor art festivals, when its streets and piazza become open-air galleries.
The former Naval Training Center in Point Loma. Its ARTS DISTRICT houses more than 30 artist studios and galleries in restored historic barracks.

A free annual celebration in Barrio Logan honoring the 1970 community takeover that created Chicano Park. It features traditional music and dance, a lowrider exhibition, children's art workshops, and arts and crafts vendors.
Held during Italian Heritage Month. Chalk artists create street paintings live in Little Italy, alongside Italian music, food, and wine tastings.
The City of San Diego's largest free holiday festival, filling Balboa Park with lights, music, food, and entertainment over two days.
ArtReach San Diego brings visual art workshops to K–6 schools across the county. It focuses on schools with no other art education resources, and ArtWalk San Diego’s festivals help support its work. Outside the Lens is a downtown nonprofit that has taught photography, filmmaking, graphic design, and emerging media to more than 27,000 young people since 2001. Check each organization’s website for ways to get involved.
Supporting San Diego’s arts scene can be as simple as showing up. Walk a First Friday, buy a piece directly from an artist at ArtWalk, or bring the family to Chicano Park Day. Have an upcoming art or cultural event to share? Send it through the Contact page for a chance to be featured.
